NYSSMA Exams
New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) evaluations are part of a state-wide music program in New York that assesses student musicians through solo performances and technical skills. Students perform in front of certified adjudicators and are evaluated on tone, technique, accuracy, musicality, and interpretation.
Evaluations are available for most instruments and voice, across six levels (Level 1–6), with Level 6 being the most advanced. Students may also participate in All-State auditions, which can lead to opportunities at the state or national level.
Participation in NYSSMA helps students build confidence, receive
valuable feedback, and strengthen college and scholarship applications.
